EU policy is crucial for European member states, as its laws intervene either directly (regulation) or indirectly (directive) in national legislative processes. One of the core tasks of the International Affairs Department of the German Biogas Association is the monitoring of proposed European legislation. This is for one done via cooperation with EU-associations like the European Biogas Association (EBA) and the European Renewable Energy Federation (EREF) which are main partners on the European level. Via contributions to their position papers and sharing of information the German Biogas Association’s interest are brought on European level.
The GBA also works with Waste Associations like the European Compost Network (ECN) and the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA). Besides, GBA takes part on its own in EU consultations and generally attempts to influence framework conditions for biogas with respect to a sustainable expansion of biogas and digestate applications within the member states. For this, we also cooperate with German renewable energy associations like the German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) and the Federal Association for Bioenergy (BBE) to reinforce our goals. Our association is active in questions on sustainability of biogas and greenhouse gas calculations, biomethane as fuel and biogas applications in the heat and power sector as well as in questions on waste digestion, digestate application and veterinarian requirements. Besides we work on the design of the power market, on permitting, safety and standardization issues.
